True Grit by Charles Portis
4.0

I just finished this book while on vacation, and I have to say I loved it. Apparently I’m going through a “badass female protagonist” phase, because this short novel follows 14-year-old Mattie Ross, who’s off to seek revenge for the murder of her father. She convinces a crusty, old, super mean, drunk US Marshall to help, and off they go. The story is told from Mattie’s perspective, and the style is stark, quick-moving and straightforward. Honestly, it’s a breath of fresh air for me: so different than what I normally read, and I am loving it. Don’t be scared off by the little “WESTERN” tag on the spine; yes, there are cowboys, but there is not a cliche to be found. The whole thing is actually quite funny, especially when the decorum of the Old South meets the rough Old West. There are snakes, horses, and a whole hell of a lot of guns. Summer reading at is finest.
