Dubliners by James Joyce
4.0
Yeah yeah, I know there’s that thing about dead white male authors and perspectives shown. And I’ve agreed with plenty of those, HOWEVER, Joyce’s exploration of the zeitgeist of Dublin through contrasting, fleeting perspectives of its residents is beautiful. His mastery of narrative voice is a joy to observe passively and actively, with each story raising interesting queries which are then oftentimes answered once reread and analysed.
Of particular note are the ways in which he assists with reader interpretation. Whilst there are a multitude of ways in which you could take a story, Joyce oftentimes demonstrates the main intent behind it with a subtle nudge via the title. Once the connection is made between story and title, you are often left with a sigh of satisfaction and a unique thought or perspective that lasts for a week.
