Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan

5.0

This series was my introduction to eastern Mythology and I don’t think I could’ve chosen better!

The sequel in the Celestial Kingdom duology felt slightly faster paced than the first, but with a little less action. It provided further development with each love interest, proving how great Sue Lynn Tan is at writing mature relationships with so much emotional depth that I felt constantly torn - I can’t remember the last time I felt so evenly split!

The series shows off Tan’s skill at writing strong characters who are flawed but so wholeheartedly good (even the morally grey Wenzhi!) that you can’t help but love them. Heart of the Sun Warrior added even more layers to each character and rounded out their story in the most beautiful way.

This features a lot more grief than the first in the series, but conveys the strength and hope that comes from building relationships and friendships despite the potential for loss. The writing style allows you to follow Xingyin’s journey and feel her emotions as if you’re experiencing them yourself, which I don’t often find. This helped pull you deeper into the story, meaning that characters I didn’t feel all that attached to still left an impact.

Overall, a magical series that I will definitely recommend - especially to those who have never read any Eastern mythology before!
