Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award 2020, The Yield by Tara June Winch is another superb contemporary novel on Indigenous Australians and their culture.
_________
Following up from the previous winner of the Miles Franklin Award, Too Much Lip, this was a book I enjoyed even more. To write boldly and so confidently about the plight and mistreatment of Indigenous Australians, but to do so with such literary skill is what makes The Yield such an important book. A smorgasbord of voices: multi-generational, informative, but always in a comforting and skilfully woven narrative voice, Winch provides chapter after chapter.
_________
Who knew you could learn so much about Aboriginal words and phrases in a work of literary fiction. The Yield shows us the power of knowledge and perception through the mediation of language, and the importance of acknowledging the traditional owners of our land.
