The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

1.0

This book shows up repeatedly on lists of the most difficult books. Why, then, should we read it? I spent almost as much time reading explanations of the book as I did on the book itself. If that much outside reading is required to even marginally understand a book, is it really worth the time?

What observation about society did it make that I couldn't live without? The fall of the Southern aristocracy? What change did it incite that wouldn't have happened had this book not been written? Millions of disgruntled high schoolers for all I can tell.

Maybe my attitude will be better after the book club discussion.

UPDATE: Nope. The book group confirmed that outside reading is essential to understanding this novel. I stand by my one star review.
