3.0

This book seemed like a very appropriate 3 star.  I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. I haven’t read YA in a long time, so perhaps I was being too critical, but the writing often fell very flat for me. There was an overuse of colloquialisms (she dug her fingernails into her palms…. Every other page), inconsistent dialogue (formal one minute, almost using slang the next minute). I think my favorite part was the character arch of their father, but even that annoyed be a little bit because of how Azalea acted around him. She was a frustrating character for me.  It was as written in third person, so it felt unnecessary how much insight we got into her thoughts and emotions that were honestly annoying most of the time.  She fit the “headstrong female character” trope to a T, constantly putting herself and her siblings in harms way with nothing really coming of it. I was recommended this book, force, cozy winter vibes, and I do think it delivered on that. They were a few parts that made me giggle too, and I do think they portrayed the sister relationship very well.
