honestly, part of the lower rating is that this should be considered a memoir or an autobiography instead of history. there are lots of elements of history, and Randall is certainly interested in interrogating and correcting the current perception of country history that prioritizes white artists, but the heart of this book is about Randall's life. I found the bits of history the most interesting, but that's what I picked it up for. as a history I found it unfocused, as a memoir I found it heartbreakingly earnest and sincere.
