This book is **BIG** on themes, in a small package. It might be meant for middle schoolers, but it's not a condescending book at all. I remember being 12, and on the cusp of leaving childhood behind. Caroline grows up, figures out who she is, learns to forgive herself and others, starts seeing shades of grey. This is a great bildungsroman!
Graphic: Outing, Religious bigotry, Self harm, Abandonment, Suicide attempt, Lesbophobia, Child abuse, Bullying, Grief, and Physical abuse
Minor: Mental illness and Infidelity
