Circles of Hell by Dante Alighieri

A compact selection from a large historical work is an attractive proposition. In the case of this little volume, it’s maybe only partially successful. I enjoyed the whistlestop tour through some of the more famous and/or gruesome areas of hell, but with no sense of the nature or agenda of the main character and his guide (?) it’s difficult to get much out of it. It has left me interested enough to consider reading the full text but this book of excerpts doesn’t feel as successful as the other titles in this excellent series.
