A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

5.0

I should have hated this book. Russian literature. A man stuck in a hotel for decades (?). Lots of reviews mentioning its poetic language. But there was so much hype over it that I had to give it a try. I feel fortunate to have allowed myself the pleasure. Yes the language can be poetic, but in a way that reflects the Count’s former station in life. Rather than create a slog fest, it adds to the character building. Set in Russia with plenty of Russian elements, it’s also very approachable. It’s been a very long time since I dreaded the end of a book. I’ll miss the Metropol and all of its incredible characters. This is a book I’ll be thinking of for quite a while and recommending with reckless abandon.
