I think the reason Normal People did so well is that it is so relatable to the millennial adolescence experience. I loved how the dialogue often exposes Connell's and Marianne's insecurities, however, Rooney really played into the preoccupation with appearance over vulnerability. I could relate to the reasons Connell and Marianne wanted to keep each other at arms-length to protect themselves, but they couldn’t help but fall together.
