The King's Spinster Bride
by Ruby Dixon
The King's Spinsters Bride, follows Halla and Mathior. Halla is a forgotten Princess of an overthrown kingdom, Yshrem, forced to live in seclusion for fear that if she shows her face, it will be seen as an act of rebellion, declaration of war, or threat to the throne, by the Cyclops, Alistair, who conquered her kingdom in the first place. All despite the fact that she is the only reason that man only son and heir is still breathing. That son being Mathior. Mathior, once a very young kid with an infatuation with Princess Halla as a result of her saving his life from her very own people, is now a grown man and new King of Yshrem. Even though he has gone through his childhood, teenage years and is now an adult, his love for Halla is still strong and he decides as king, that he will finally go for what he's always wanted, Halla.

This was cute. Exactly what I needed right now. Something quick and dirty with a lot of passion and heart that got straight to the point. I'm really starting to appreciate that about novellas or these short books that are less than 200 pages. I loved this premise. This kind of play on the classic beauty and the beast story. For whatever reason these types of stories, if done correctly, just speak to me. The whole idea of two very different kinds of people, finding and falling for one another despite the ridicule they may face from their family or friends. Seeing the beauty in each other even though that beauty is different from their own standards of beauty. And to top it off, with this book in particular... the idea that a young boy falls in love in his own childish way, with someone twice his age, going through life being infatuated and smitten by her all the way into adulthood, and in the end actually getting to fulfill his childhood dreams?! It was like the perfect fairy tale elevated with a touch of savagery thrown in. How could you NOT enjoy that?
Even though it was pretty short, Ruby did a very good job at exposition, world building and setting the stage for this story to take place.
I appreciate that Halla, while virtuous in a biblical sense, due to having had to been sequested away in a covenant for half of her adult life, was not the typical shy damsel that I usually see. She had gusto and hutspa. If she had an opinion, objection or concern with something, she voiced it. Even though she was inexperinced in the art and acts of seduction, she didnt shy away and act scandalized.
I really enjoyed Mathior as well. He was so headstrong and sure of himself and what he wanted, which was Halla. So much so that despite the endless opportunities, he exhibited a noble amount of patience and discipline which prevailed over instint and pleasure. He had JUST the right amount of "Alpha Male" without being overbearing or problematic which only made it easier for me to root for him.
Super short, super sweet with just the right amount of intensity and passion. The King's Spinster Bride is the perfect quick read. Definitely recommend!
