I had to pick this us as soon as I finished Annihilation. For me, it doesn’t pack the same punch, but it’s enough for me to want to continue with the series.

The writing is incisive. Even in the slow and tedious bits, it was still written beautifully.

I think it’s a change of pace that feels like a step backward. A lot happens in just the last few chapters. This is the best part of the book and a lot of pieces fall in to place. I just didn’t feel as invested in these pieces as I should have been. The most satisfying mysteries ‘solved’ were those from Annihilation.

I also think I was hoping for more from the biologist, and if ‘spoiled’ my reading that we didn’t get so much from her. Control is interesting, but I’m not as invested in him. Whether that’s because I don’t find him relatable or he’s not written to be empathised with, I’m not completely sure.

There is something unique to Vandermeer’s writing and ideas. Even though this is not a booked I especially enjoyed, I am still compelled to move to the next entry!
