“We don’t always get to choose the emotions we feel, but we do get to choose how we allow them to rule us.”

Essie and Nate are stuck working together as the maid of honor and best man. They’ve both got a shared past—namely that kiss in college they never talk about—and they’re trying to ignore it. So, instead of addressing the awkwardness, they throw jabs at each other to cover up their actual feelings. Beneath all the teasing, though, you can tell they’re both hiding hurt and insecurities they’re not ready to deal with.

Nate is caught in a struggle inside—he longs to love and be loved, but his past experiences with women (esp. with his mother) have left him hesitant. Essie, on the other hand, is the kind of girl who believes in fairy-tale love. Even though Nate should be annoyed by all her sweetness and drive to make everything perfect, he’s totally hooked:

“She’s a ray of sunshine. I like how I feel when I’m around her.”

“I Could Be Yours” really lives up to its title. Nate and Essie have such a great chemistry, always wondering if they could actually be “it” for each other. I really enjoyed this one, especially the audiobook narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Savannah Peachwood. It works as a standalone, but be ready to meet some favorite characters from before and get hints about what’s coming next.
