Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

I enjoyed (an understatement) A Love Song for Ricki so I decided to give this one a read. It was almost a DNF for me. This is a heavy read, the soundtrack [in my head] that accompanied this story was that of pain/misery. This story has the weight of disability, substance abuse, mental health, attempted sexual assault, death, self-harm, and complicated family dynamics. The lovers at the beginning were like baby birds too weak to fly and so it became a relationship bond held together by trauma, understanding and codependency. Which later developed into obsessive love letters between paperback pages. The most beautiful love story in this was that of mother, Eva and daughter, Aubrey. But I had a really hard time feeling this as a love story. I was saddened, annoyed, eye rolled more than ever and overall felt disconnected from this read. This book was so front loaded with trauma and drama from the past that the moment of a love story seemed to be relegated to the ending chapters and the epilogue. The conclusion was pleasing but also I felt relieved to be finished.

I know so many of my friends enjoyed this read but I guess this is just one that missed me, and I am okay with that.
