The Metamorphosis
by Franz Kafka
Gregor is burning his vitality in the furnace of corporate slavery, when, subjugated by his manager and used by his family, he finally transforms into the disgusting bug that he has long been in the eyes of the world. And ya know? The relinquishing of responsibly is almost worth it. Then his useless family get real jobs, they weirdly abstain from any attempts at communication, and when he finally starves himself to no longer be a burden, they discard his dead body like garbage.
The End.
I mean yeah. I can see why this has long served as an endless springboard for the contrived symbolism of dreary lit classes, and I'm sure the style was unique and shocking when originally published. But on the heels of reading Lolita, Pride and Prejudice, and the Handmaid's Tale, I can hardly see that this deserves its acclaim.
