Pocket Apocalypse by Seanan McGuire
4.0

I wish that the covers for Seanan McGuire's InCryptid series hadn't gotten quite so comic-ish (other than those for Discount Armageddon and Midnight Blue-Light Special). I wonder if readers skipped the series because of the covers, not knowing how wonderful Seanan McGuire's storytelling skills are, how wickedly funny her sense of humor is, and how entertaining this series is.

Anyway.

Alex Price met Shelby Tanner in Half-Off Ragnarok, and now she's asked him to travel to Australia to help her family with a werewolf problem. Her family's ultra speciesist, ultra protective, and completely nuts (I'm not even remotely kidding here, folks). There were multiple times where I honestly couldn't tell if Alex was in more danger from the Tanners and their group of cryptozoologists, or the werewolves.

Which is probably the best way for Alex to show he really does love Shelby, lol! Of course, that only matters if he survives his Australian adventure...

Pocket Apocalypse is full of McGuire's trademark snark and sense of humor, and I laughed out loud at more than a few passages. Ok, ok, I snorted. It's a very good thing no liquids traversed the path from my nostrils to my laptop. o.O Not content with just funnies, McGuire also packs this installment with action (werewolf attacks!), more action (more werewolf attacks!), drama (oh, the joys of family), and new species in a continent already packed with just about every kind of flora and fauna that can kill a man faster than you can say "Bless You!" after a sneeze.

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest InCryptid offering, and now I'm back to wondering when I can get more. If you like your urban fantasy filled with crazy creatures, fabulous storytelling, and snicker-snort-inducing humor, you must check out this series. And when you've read all four, check out McGuire's zombie-apocalypse Newsflesh trilogy - one of my absolute faves!
