Chosen Ones

Not a lot of love here for a book I was so excited for. First off, this is a Young Adult book. I'm not sure why it is marketed as adult. Making characters 30 years old doesn't make an adult book if the characters still act and sound like teenagers. I was honestly surprised how old they were, once the ages were revealed in the first few chapters. Speaking of characters, I didn't like any of them. Not one had a single redeeming quality. The story felt disjointed, with the use of top secret documents, transcripts, book excerpts, and newspaper articles to tell us how this world and its magic works. I know a lot of people enjoy this and think it is creative, but I am not one of those people. In this instance it felt lazy. Don't tell me, show me. I want to feel like I'm in the world with the characters, not read about it thru text. The book did pick up in the last few chapters, and started to flow more seamlessly, but I found the ending unremarkable. Also, am I really the only one that found many elements wildly identical to Harry Potter, that it started to read as a bad fanfiction? Perhaps my expectations were just too high. Extra points for one beautiful hardcover book.
