The Winter Prince by Constance Lopez

5.0

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone

– this takes place in the same world as Constance Lopez’s Kasmian Chronicles series, though you don’t need to read it to enjoy this story

– this is told from Revi, Kienna, & Enlo’s points of view

– there are some mentions of fantasy violence with resulting injuries/some bleeding

Review:

This was interesting and slightly unexpected with the twist given to the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale (You’ll have to read the book to find out what the twist was)! I enjoyed Revi and how his character correlated with the Beast character from the tale but was still his own between being a fae and being trapped in his animal forms which he had prior to being cursed. I loved Enlo and the support he gave his cousin when they first put their hopeful plan into motion to save the Winter Court from Revi’s poor decision. (He did make me a little upset/mad at him though when he kind of changed his stance on their original plan when he started getting desperate and it seemed like things weren’t progressing as they’d hoped.) I also really liked Kienna and how she wanted to help while she was keeping the bargain struck by her father with Revi. I loved that when she wasn’t being given answers willingly she took matters into her own hands to find out what she could and make the most of her stay. I can’t wait to see what will happen in other Kasmian Chronicles books based on something that happened with a character at the end of this story!

Summary:

Revi, the fae Winter Prince, was cursed after he chose not to honor a bargain he made with another fae. Now he and his court are trapped in a climate that they and their magic cannot survive in much longer. If Revi and his cousin Enlo can’t find a way to fulfill the curse’s demand of a heart freely given, then they will watch as their people suffer until they are no more. But hope comes to them in the form of a human patrolman stealing one of the precious roses from the heart of the Winter Court, one of the few plants that have survived the blight. With this offense against the Winter Court, Revi and Enlo strike a bargain for the stolen bloom: return with a beautiful human woman and have her stay for a year and a day to repay the slight. If they can manage to get the girl to fall for Revi in that time, maybe they’ll have a chance to end the curse and restore the Winter Court to it’s former glory. But can anyone truly fall for a beast?

Kienna doesn’t know why the Winter Prince bargained for a woman to stay for a year and a day in his court with him, but she is determined to discover if she can provide any help. Unfortunately, the fae around the prince’s home are too tight-lipped on the subject. Left with nothing else to do, she chooses to learn more about the people and the area she’ll be living in for the next year in hopes that maybe something in her learning will point her in the right direction. But instead, Kienna finds something else that becomes more intriguing. In her dreams is a silvery man who wants her to not trust her eyes when it comes to her waking world. Though he also will not expand upon the reason she’s in the court, Kienna is determined to free the man from what she believes is an imprisonment somewhere within the building she is staying in. But as she falls for the man, Kienna wonders if she can trust her heart to him…
