Flight: Book 1 of the Crescent Chronicles by Alyssa Rose Ivy
1.0
Allie (18) breaks up with her high school boyfriend and goes to work in New Orleans for the summer. The new guy whose flirting with her turns out to be the prince of a secret supernatural society.
This is spoilery but it's my biggest issue with the book.Towards the end of the book, Allie and Levi go on a date, Levi gives her a ring and then they sleep together. It's only when Allie's friend Hayley shows up and sees the ring that it turns out she can't take it off - because they consummated. Apparently, Levi forgot to mention that if they had sex with the ring on it wouldn't come off and she would essentially be forced into becoming the queen of his secret paranormal society. Which she hadn't even agreed to! Agreeing to wear a piece of jewellery that your date gifted you and agreeing to have sex do not mean agreeing to spend the rest of your life with the guy, in his city, helping him run his paranormal society!!!!
Now, this was a reread for me and I read the entirety of the first trilogy multiple times when I was a younger teenager and quite enjoyed it. I will say that they do spend the entirety of the second book essentially making Levi make up for this horrendous mistake so it's not like the lack of consent here isn't problematised, but it's definitely sort of "yeah he fucked up and majorly majorly violated every right you have to make your own decisions about your life, but you like each other and so if he grovels enough you should forgive him" vibes. And with how clearly they problematise the ex-boyfriend who was similarly not respectful of Allie's life choices, it feels like a very convenient excuse. Yeah she likes him and went on a date and had sex with the guy... she didn't agree to spend her whole lifebeing the queen of some secret supernatural society, stuck in New Orleans and under protection unless some other supernatural guy comes after her ! So it's fun, but I just can't overlook this major consent issue.
