Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
4.25

🔥 “You’ve been living a DREAM for long enough… Welcome to your NIGHTMARE!”

🔥 I had been so excited to read ‘Iron Widow’ by Xiran Jay Zhao ever since it released and I finally got my copy!! 🙈

🔥 I’ve been obsessed with Asian mythology and history inspired YA fantasies lately, so this one was definitely on my priority TBR list. Inspired by the story of China’s only female empress, Wu Zetian, ‘Iron Widow’ is an epic futuristic action-packed sci-fi mashup with a ferocious heroine and her cathartic feminism!

🔥 Summary:

In Huaxia boys pair up with girls to co-pilot Chrysalises (giant transforming robots which can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall) but the girls often die from the mental strain.   When Zetian offers herself up as a pilot, she kills her male co-pilot in an unexpected way through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed! She is labeled an “Iron Widow”, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot.   To tame her unnerving strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest male pilot in Huaxia . Zetian having had a taste of power, will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

🔥 It was a brutal, bloodthirsty read, full of rage and I was really intrigued to see how Zetian fights to shatter patriarchal definitions of power. I’m all for a ruthless, unapologetic, unyielding heroine and Wu Zetian was just the right female protagonist!
