From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death by Caitlin Doughty

challenging dark funny informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

5.0

This might be my favourite of Caitlin's books and I am so glad that I finally got to it.

When it comes to funerals we often think that you should either get cremated either get buried in a casket but we often forget that other cultures have different rituals when it comes to taking care of their dead loved ones - and this book touches on a couple different rituals surrounding death. It talks about Japan being very modernized- most places have electronic access and you can even visit your loved one virtually if you cannot make it in person, it also touches on open pyre, worshipping skulls, air burial, green burial and bringing the mummified bodies back out of the graves in order to take care of them and talking to them before burying them again for a period of time. Each chapter felt unique and different and you learn so much about how different parts of the world deal with death and the things surrounding death. It's a book about a topic that is rarely brought up.
