YEAH!!
I knew I was probably going to enjoy this book the moment I heard it was an Afro-Latinx retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice. I'm not sure what's in the water to bless us with such pop-culture focus on this myth in this moment, but I'm so so grateful we're getting Lilliam Rivera's approach while we're at it. This is such a charming, lush story- the Bronx comes alive in this tale, the characters are interesting and layered. Eury and Pheus' interactions are just FUN to read - the teasing and slow opening is exactly what I want for a late-summer romance.
I wish there had been more space to learn about Pheus' dad, but even having a moment where teenagers realize that their parents are more complex and more wholly formed than they knew is an absolute delight.
Don't miss this one, especially if you want to think about a story in which Eurydice gets the last word...
