In A Portrait Joyce considers the personal journey inward with penetration and sagacity. He uses metaphor beautifully and so, it transcends the personal and enters the collectively relevant and relatable metaphysical sphere. The troubling necessity of the human psyche to rise above base animal desires in order to achieve spiritual transmutation or some sort of connection with it's own soul becomes painfully clear. His great manipulation of the English language was enough to make me devour every word in this book, but the manner in which Joyce articulates the thoughts and questions I found in-articulable affected me profoundly. The scope and structure are magnificent. Nearly perfect
