The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story
by Susan Hill
I had a really hard time rating this one. Once again I find myself stuck between a 3 and a 4. Rounding down on this one.
The story takes quite a bit of time to ramp up. I loved the atmosphere though, which kept me going. The writing is a bit dense, and takes some getting used to, and I think this kind of removed me from the story-telling, if that makes sense? Like I could tell that scene was supposed to be moody and creepy, but I didn't really feel that.
The plot, once it did get going, was great. The second half in particular moved pretty quickly, and I was definitely invested. That detached feeling did remain though!
Overall, I dug it, but I didn't love it. Maybe this is meant to be a single day read, which sitting on a porch in the fog?
