Walden was an amazing book to read. If read “correctly” it will make you think and evaluate many aspects of your life and about the society we live in. It is somewhat surprising that the things Thoreau complains about in his book, written in the 1850s, are still widely applicable today, and if not very comparable, it is mostly because things have gotten way worse.
That said, it is difficult to enjoy every chapter on Walden, even for someone who has an inherent interest in nature. Thoreau’s pages on the depth, color, tidal changes etc. of the Walden Lake tend to be too long, sometimes being the main theme. Or his divagations about the weather, or the ant wars. However, the book wouldn’t be what it is without them, and in the end, these pieces also contain a particular bit or relevance to his philosophy, and the overall trend of the book.
