Misrule
by Heather Walter
I received a copy of this story from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the first book so much and I had such high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it didn't quite deliver. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could.
I think the first pain point for me is that this is no longer an adaptation of a fairy tale. It's the continuation of original characters' story and journey. So some of that novelty, that cleverness was missing.
I didn't connect with the characters as much this time around. Don't get me wrong, they were still good. And the new additions were delightful. I mean, I'd love to see more of Torin, Neve, and Derek (and Chaos). Rose was still her annoying, despicable self. But Alyce and Aurora were each frustratingly stuck in a cycle of distrust, doubt, and self-involvement. I wanted to shake them both.
I had some similar pain points here as I did with the first book. It dragged at times. And the descriptions were occasionally repetitive. Add to that that a lot of the romance was missing.
The ending was fantastic. I didn't think it would go in that direction but it did and I love it. I truly applaud the ending.
If you were on the fence with the first one, take a moment to think about it before committing (and it is a commitment). But if you really enjoyed the first book like I did, I'd recommend reading this one. It gives you a nice sense of closure.
