Emotional Intelligence
by Daniel Goleman
An all around good read for those wanting (or in the case at my organization, required) to delve into questions of conflict management, motivation, professional develop, and all around self-improvement and control. Not an ooey-gooey book at all, in fact, the authors provide a readable summary of research and anecdotes, along with practical scenarios with which everyone can relate. The hardest part about getting someone to appreciate this book is getting past the title. Getting a coworker, friend or loved one (including oneself) to approach emotions in a rational way is difficult. The plentiful how-to, or 12-step type professional guides about understanding one's work style, making relationships better, etc, may be helpful in specific instances, but generally ignore the wiring that controls our thoughts and actions.
