The strong sense of place is this book's absolute assett.  Its "playful" approach to language its absolute downfall. Cherished here is a litany of excruciating in-jokes and unwitty catchphrases. The book forms its own self-made grammar that is supposed to be wry charming and allegedly beautiful... but by the end I just found it risible. "Playful" prose that just rubbished its not un-promising virtues.
