War Hour
by Lauren Loscig
Lysta goes out to get supplies for her and her friend Thoman when she stops to help a young girl who is being cornered by thugs. When she tries to help, the girl shifts back into a boy who then takes her to Lord Drytas for the Trial since she pulled an illegal weapon out. Andrea now Lysta must become Trialed the one thing she has always tried to avoid.
I really wanted to like this book! I mean the premise and idea were there, the world is there, there’s unique magic and abilities, and there’s political intrigue. I thought it was interesting that in order to gain an ability you have to be Trialed and depending on how you solve the Trial, is what determines your abilities(multiple of you Trial more than once).
There’s also a lot of political intrigue since there are different courts one must navigate and then the Lords have their Heirs, who all made me think of Gossip Girl with the drama and betrayals going on.
And although I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the characters, I did love Evander! He was the best character, the most interesting and fun character, and I love how his role played out!
That being said, the severe lack of detail of this world caused me to struggle real hard when reading this book. I wanted to stop reading, but I don’t like DNFing books because usually the ending makes up for it. And the ending did help!
I wish there was more world building and detail about the world and the magic or abilities people have. I had more questions than anything else. Why are there Untrialed and Trialed? Do all people have magic, or do they HAVE to go through a Trial to gain magic or an ability? What makes Lysta sooo special? What is such a big deal about going through a Trial? And why is it that Lysta just suddenly learns her ability so quickly without any training? Also why is it that she can handle a dagger so well when it doesn’t seem like she’s ever learned how to use one properly? How old is anyone in this book!? There’s a part at the beginning that gave me the impression that Lysta is only 15! Which makes sense since she and most of the other kids acted very young and immature. And how is it the court that Lysta is from is getting away with what they’re doing when it seems like all the other courts meet regularly and talk amongst themselves and yet have no idea what’s going on with Lord Drytas and his court? Just so much detail left out and just made me question everything.
I will say the ending is exciting and really helped, but I still didn’t understand the world. The ending is exciting when it comes to the plot and the twists and revelations that occur, which were also very obviously going to occur, but it still was exciting to read.
Now, this may just be me, I know many will enjoy this book, so take my review with a grain of salt! I think this story has potential, it just needs more review over the details and world to have it make more sense.
I received a free digital copy of read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
