Moon of the Crusted Snow
by Waubgeshig Rice
I listened to this book on audio, and I would highly recommend it. The pronunciation of the language used in here is a great help to understand the context, and I think it offered a great insight into what the author was trying to do.
This book is a post-apocalyptic novel set around the experiences of a First Nations community in northern Canada. I think this was an incredible insight into a perspective of this common imagining, and I would love to see more in the future.
The prose is dark and ominous at times, with an isolated atmosphere. The writing was lovely at times, and the character relationships were strong.
The ending lost me a bit. I felt this book was trying to be both an emotionally searing account of a possible future, and an action packed plot focused story. It felt most authentic when dealing with the every day lives of the characters, and how that changed.
An important book, and one that I’m glad I read.
