Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria

4.0

I'd give this one a 3 1/2 but round up to a four because I like the voice, the characters, and the inclusive universe. What needed work was the plot and pacing. It seemed like we started this story a day late, right after our main four were caught attempting something and sentenced to death for treason. We missed that whole event. I stopped my audiobook to see if I'd accidentally missed a book 1 in this series, but no, this is stand alone. Why did we miss this key event and then get told about it after the fact, trying to piece it together? I'm not sure. So that seemed like a missed opportunity. Also, there's quite a bit of backstory, but not all of it was brought in seemlessly. I liked the story, but the melding of current timeline scenes and backstory plus trying to figure out the past failed heist plus the new one, it was confusing and messed with the pacing.

I would read more from this author, but would like some more attention to the sequence of events and scenes.
