Casting Spells by Barbara Bretton

3.0

I really did enjoy this book. I loved the Starts Hollow-esq nature of Sugar Maple. I liked the mix of supernatural beings all in one town. I just took issue with a few things. The first (and biggest) is the author's depiction of New England. How does a cop that works in Boston get transferred to a town in Vermont? Does she know that New England isn't one state? The whole 'live free or die' thing? Yeah, not all New Englanders go around proclaiming how they would rather die than not be free. That's not to mention her issue of geography. Luke lived in a town between New Bedford and Salem? LOL! The whole east coast of Massachusetts is between New Bedford (which is close to the Rhode Island border) and Salem. I'm also not sure I really bought the romance between Chloe and Luke. There really were no qualities listed as to why Chloe loved Luke. What was it about him that attracted her? As for Luke, the only thing he really mentioned was her looks (and even then her skinny body and small boobs seemed to be written about with a sense of derision). The ending also seemed really rushed. I know this sounds like a bunch of complaints, but it is a cute book. It's very sweet and a quick read.
