Himbo by Emmy Sanders
3.0
I love the Elite 8 Studios crew but, unfortunately, Cas and Jason’s story just didn’t do it for me like all of the others have.
Cas works part-time at his dad’s architecture firm and also moonlights as an adult performer under the name Himbo. He’s not sure what he wants to do with his life but thanks to his family’s wealth, there’s no rush to figure it out. Cas wants to feel fulfilled in whatever he does and spends as much time as he can giving back with his time and his inheritance. He has a big heart and maybe isn’t the smartest guy in the room but he’s so thoughtful and sweet when it comes to the people he cares about.
Jason is a nursing student and a part-time barista to finish putting himself through school. He’s a naturally shy guy, something that comes out even more when Cas shows up at his coffee shop but once he gets comfortable around him, he lets him see the real him. The real him is demisexual, struggling to make a decision about a potentially genetically inherited condition and dominating in a way Cas doesn’t expect. So much of this book is focused on Jason and his journey toward self-confidence and acceptance that I felt like he overshadowed Cas most of the time.
These two have an awkward meet cute that leads to some sweet dates but I never really felt the connection between these two characters. Jason’s demisexuality felt contradictory (to me…I’m definitely not a demisexuality expert) in so many ways but was a constant topic of conversation and Cas’s “himbo” designation also felt incorrect to me - he may not be incredibly conventionally intelligent, but I would never say that he as a himbo. Things progressed between these two fast, maybe too fast, and their “deep” relationship felt forced to me.
It wasn’t really memorable and Cas and Jason’s characters fell a little flat and their connection just didn’t pull me in. But I LOVED Brad and every minute he was on the page and I’m still looking forward to seeing what comes next for the Elite 8 Studios crew, especially Teddy’s story when we finally get there!
