I recommend this book. I love the sentences at the end of each chapter. I really felt for Kiko and the many adversities she faced.
SpoilerI thought, she needed to get out of that house asap!
People NEED to at least know of the degrading microaggressions Asians face!! It's so horrible. This book made me think again that we need to support POC voices even more and not eurocentric standards. I wanted to scream when
Spoiler a peer told Kiko to not tell anybody about him sexually assaulting her
because he didn't date 'girls like you' (UGH- didn't want to be known as a guy who likes Asians because that's weird), when her mother and uncle joked about her round nose, when her mother constantly picked at Kiko's facial features and comparing it to white, blonde, skinny, and blue-eyed models (her ideal standard of beauty), when her mom always implied that Asians are not good-looking, when her mom dismissively described her relationship with Kiko's dad like a phase (
