I am so glad this series is back! I was privileged to get an advanced reader copy. The book will be released April 7.

Three similar murders, over the span of 60 years, take place around Millers Kill. In 1972 MKPD Chief Russ Van Alstyne was a suspect for one of them, as a newly returned and PTSD-stricken Vietnam veteran. Now he must solve the murders, just as a campaign is underfoot to dissolve MKPD. At the same time, he's a new dad in his 50s, and his wife Claire is juggling her priestly duties with caring for the baby.

I loved this book, as I've loved all of Spencer-Fleming's books. Her writing is exquisite and her characters are thoughtfully crafted. I'm a writer myself, so when I need inspiration, I go back to her books.

I'd give this book 4.5 stars because of the ending. The wrap-up of the mystery seemed anticlimactic. I'd also been hoping to have a resolution to the frustrating Hadley Knox-Kevin Flynn impasse. Nope! The consolation is that the cliffhanger ending indicates there will be more books in this series.
