The Night Eternal by Guillermo del Toro

5.0

This book series is amazing and I wish I had picked it up a long time ago. You should read it even if you didn't like show; it's plenty different and not so bogged down by dramatic subplots. With the third and final book this trilogy ends with a bang, and it drags you through muck and grime and history and worms before you feel the shockwave. Every character is worth their weight in words, clinging to a cliff of hope slick with previous, present, and future tragedies. The antagonist lurks in the shadow of every page, a figure given the time to be both malevolent and believable. Friends and foes meet gory ends, with no detail spared on the pain inflicted. I've seen some reviewers complaining about the religious underpinnings of the book, but I personally enjoyed how del Toro and Hogan use this mythology to ground their monster; it doesn't ever come off as preachy. I wholeheartedly love these books and will definitely be rereading them. You should definitely check this series out.
