How to Win at College: Simple Rules for Success from Star Students by Cal Newport

4.0

I read this right after graduating high school, and this book really got me excited to go to college. It is cleverly written and a quick yet informative read, and Newport explains the often-empirical reasoning behind his assertions. However, what leaves this at 4 stars for me instead of 5 is the tone it took sometimes. For example, the tips sometimes focus on "ticking the box" of what one "should" do while in college, such as eating... The tone became a little shallow and mechanical when it strayed from emphasizing that students should pursue what they love with all they have, as it does in the beginning. Food is a bit more than fuel; students shouldn't be automatons briefly shoveling some organic nutrients down before returning to their computations. In my opinion, it's those little comforts that can help students keep their heads above water emotionally.
