The Old Man by Thomas Perry

2.0

This was disappointing. The bones of a vg story are there but the delivery is wooden and pedestrian, the relationships unrealistic and unlikely with no emotional element at all conveyed to the reader.

The set up for Zoe and the old man's relationship is ridiculous. I don't think there's a woman on the planet that would behave as she did. It just did not ring true at all. There's a reveal later on that goes some what to justifying why she did what she did but it's given v late, not developed or explored or returned to in any way.

So characterization v poor, no emotional resonance to the narrative, plot itself I enjoyed and it kept me reading. The end was satisfying if also a bit unrealistic. So many coincidences. However a lot of books like this rely on that so I wouldn't be too hard on it for that.

Actually, I bet the tv series is better, the actors would bring life to the people in the story.
