A Match Made for Murder
by Iona Whishaw
As much as I am still enjoying this series, this installment went in a direction that didn't quite work. First, because of the darker crimes in this one - rape, abuse, pedophilia - this cozy mystery series barely stayed in the cozy category. Perhaps this is intentional and the author is moving the series into a more realistic mystery genre...but it was abrupt and didn't fit with the previous books.
Also, we've gotta talk about the unrealistic ways in which our main characters are interacting with issues of race, prejudice, mixed marriage, privilege, access, etc. The book takes place in the late 40s in Canada, yet the attitudes/insights/choices displayed by the main characters reflect a MUCH more modern sensibility/worldview. It's highly unrealistic. I appreciate the addition of diversity in this installment with Officer Terrell and Martinez, but without these characters being developed in circumstances that are realistic to the 40s, it's just the addition of token minority characters. And that's problematic for the author and series.
