Horrible Histories is a classic series of books which children adore. I chose to read this one as I was aware of the reach of the British Empire but wanted to know more about the way Britain colonised the lands, with an objective, factual approach rather than the more ‘rose-tinted’ view that many books provide. I was not disappointed. Horrible Histories prides itself on delivering gruesome truth in a manageable way which ensures that children learn what has happened in history, without bias or opinion.

I used to teach Year 4 and we covered the Civil Rights Movement, so I would recommend this book as a background for the teaching of the African slave trade and the influence of Britain at this time.
