This Book Will Bury Me
by Ashley Winstead
DID NOT FINISH: 32%
I couldn't get over the fact that this book was a fictionalization of a real mass killing that happened under three years ago (Nov 2022) at time of publishing. The real case has not even actually started its trial and won't until later this year.
I find the choice to publish this "almost autofiction" as the author calls it to be incredibly disrespectful and exploitative.
The decision to release the book now truly exemplifies the "almost autofiction" of it all. The narrator's lack of consideration for the impact of her actions on others aligns with the lack of reflection that must be required to believe this book was necessary or appropriate to publish 2.5 years after the real life murders. I wish the author had chosen to sit with this manuscript for several more years as her own grief processes rather than pushing it out so quickly. I find myself wondering if the author will wish she had handled some things differently when reflecting on this book in the future.
