And I Darken is unlike anything I’ve read before.
An alternate history. A compelling female lead. A rich and vibrant world. An undeniably well-written story. Well-developed characters. Real motivations. Real plots and intrigues.
It’s just so spectacular and dark and just so REAL!
I love that Lada is White’s representation of Vlad the Impaler. I love that she reimagined this brutal, national icon into a strong, intelligent, cunning, and vicious young woman. Lada is strong and decisive and does not take shit from anybody! Ugh. I love Lada so much. I am so freaking glad that White didn’t allow Lada to become mushy after developing a relationship with Mehmed. I would have been thoroughly pissed if this girl who once swore to cut out a man’s tongue on their wedding night and ate it so that she could be both husband and wife, turned into another atypical YA heroine with goo-goo eyes for the male lead.
The only reason this book got a 4 instead of a 5 is a felt that sometimes the pacing was off, some scenes could have been omitted, and I kind of really intensely disliked Radu’s chapters.
