Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Waltz

4.0

This was my first foray into comic book Ninja Turtles. I grew up with the cartoon (80s), toys, and then the live action movies and the video games.

This is good. Eastman is clearly cribbing from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, which given the Turtles origin as a parody of Miller's Daredevil, I find a certain poetic harmony throughout the text.

This is a great adventure of how we got here (things went very, very bad for our heroes) and what the last Turtle is going to do about it (finish the war, but at what cost?). I could easily see this adapted to a movie, but it works beautifully as a graphic novel and I am happy if it remains only in this medium. If you love the Turtles, or you love a good "King Conan" story or The Dark Knight Returns, this is expertly done and worth your time and money.
