Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell

2.0

I’m not surprised this book was turned into a tv show since the book was episodic but I have to say that the tv show was a vast improvement on the book. I was disappointed reading this as I knew it was different to the show but I still hoped it would be good but I can tell you it isn’t. The book’s episodic structure gets tiresome, none of the characters are fleshed out or likeable characters, there is a lot of violence against partners/friends by both female and male characters, every character is either a jerk or bitch, a lot of characters seem like high school students with adult lives because no one seems to be able to hold themselves accountable or function independently. Carrie specifically is childlike, immature and toxic. The dialogue between Carrie and Mr. Big towards the end is so immature and toxic it’s ridiculous. Also there’s heaps of slut shaming for a book that was meant to be open to casual sex and the descriptions of sex workers and the sex industry really makes me question whether Candace Bushnell has indeed had any experience with the sex industry or sex workers. My advice; watch the show and movies and don’t read the book.
