"'I thought I was supposed to be good and follow the rules,' I say. "But I am done with being weak. I am done with being good. I think I am going to be something else."
There's a hype that surrounds this book that made me avoid it for some time, I desperately despise being disappointed and my avoidant personality means that I tend not to read books until their hype passes. Or as an ARC to help create the hype.
Oh, boy, this book packs a punch. If it's possible to feel speechless whilst typing at strangers on the internet then label me speechless.
Overall, the plot was great, I was clueless on where the plot would head, and I was not disappointed when the plot took a turn. The characters themselves, even if I did not particularly like the characters (Taryn, for instance), felt fully developed with hints of rich background stories.
Jude was an interesting main character, I enjoyed that she was simultaneously vulnerable and tough. She made choices that kept me hooked, the writing was truly compelling, maybe Holly Black really is fay and her writing a spell.
I wasn't fussed on Cardan, the enemies-to-lovers trope only works for me if neither of the potential couple are bullies. A few pages of charm doesn't make up for almost an entire book of bullying. The scene of Jude and the forceful fruit eating was particularly disturbing for me, but in hindsight it seemed crucial in the character development.
I'm intrigued to see how this particularly Faerie kingdom pans out.
