Lore by Alexandra Bracken
5.0
This book was nearly perfect (according to my tastes.)
Lore by Alexandra Bracken is a YA novel based upon Greek Mythology.
The story follows the MC, Lore, through present day experiences and uses intermittent flashbacks to seven years ago, helping us understand events that led up to her current predicament.
I have a love/hate relationship with YA female leads. That said, I love Lore. She is driven, courageous, compassionate, and not at all "woe is me" or whiny. Her rage is a sort of repetitive problem-causing agent, but given the things she has been through, I think it's realistic.
I absolutely adore that her driving force is not a man. Sure, there is still a romance for those that want that sort of thing, but I could take it or leave it.
The villains are amazing. I find I am usually more interested in villainous characters than heroes. They tend to be more layered and intriguing. Thankfully, the heroes, especially Lore, are multi-layered as well--but back to the villains. One of the things I love is not knowing who to trust. I ESPECIALLY love when the character is able to trick me (and an author has written the complexities of the character and the relationships so well that I'm just as blindsided as the character when a betrayal occurs.)
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and I highly recommend it. There are some pretty horrifically violent scenes, some/many including children. I found those tough, but they weren't gratuitous or purposeless. There is some kissing and a few desirous descriptions, but nothing that goes beyond a PG rating.
If you're looking for an enjoyable, fast-paced, action-packed, twisting and turning plot, this is a great option.
