As a second-generation immigrant child, I found Simu’s story so relatable.
I would give full stars to the first act of his book in which he shares his parents’ background growing up in China during the cultural revolution — a key event in Chinese history that has shaped the Chinese profoundly. He recalls the challenges of being raised by parents with vastly different life experiences and cultural values, and the struggle to break away from their set high expectations. In fact, I was surprised at just how much similarity in behavior I was able to observe between Simu’s childhood and my own.
The reason why this book doesn’t get full hearts is that the third and final act of the book was seemingly seeping smugness. I’m incredibly happy about the fact that Asian representation in media is getting more attention, and that Simu is actively contributing, but I just couldn’t help caring less as his narrative voice became more and more cocky.
Overall still a great memoir; also go see Shang-Chi if you haven’t yet!
