Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance
by Angela Duckworth
At times feel-goody, at times startling I vacillated on how exactly to rate this book. I came to it with a purpose that was well-suited to Duckworth's work. I was also able to branch out from her summaries of other research to find more context and insight. In that sense it's an engaging lit review of social psychology filtered through the theme of grit. It remains, however, overly infatuated with capitalist success and ignores counterindicators like race, class, and gender that suggest grit is far more socially influenced (and less positive) than her narrative of individual effort leading to personal success.
