as much as I wanted to like this, it took me almost 50% of the book to fully get into this and to start enjoying it. normal people would have given up I'm sure. I am a Wendell Bambleby enjoyer, thus I could not.

it is another case of me not being a fan of the main character, Emily Wilde, who is, rather unfortunately for me, the main character and it's told from primarily her POV in a diary format. she does get more bearable, but the beginning chapters when it's just her were awfully boring. necessary for the contrast, but did it have to last as long as it did....it was torture.

the magic and lore and Bambleby were fantastic, I would take all of that and more, and genuinely would read the rest of this trilogy for exactly that reason - it's all the faerie stuff we know and love, and that's exactly why I love it.

but Emily Wilde is such a dull character, I don't know if I could stand more of her POV.... also learning that cosy fantasies may not be for me.
